Bountiful Community Church
Established 1881
The Bountiful Community Church was established as a
Congregational Mission by missionary teachers, David and Alice Peebles in 1881.
They constructed a rock building at 174 West 400 South in Bountiful serving as a
church and a school. They called it “Bliss Hall” after the first executive
secretary of the New West Education Commission, Charles R. Bliss (not to be
confused with the Reverend Frank M. Blish of the First Congregational Church of Salt
Lake City).
The congregation disbanded its church organization in 1900, then reorganized in
1914 having remained an active educational and social community institution. In
1950, the church was incorporated as Bountiful Community Church Congregational.
The last service held in Bliss Hall was June 8, 1953.
By 1954, this Bountiful congregation was using a new building located on 150
North Orchard Drive. With all the growth of the congregation, a new sanctuary
was built at 100 North and 400 East. It was dedicated in 1962.
Education has always been of the utmost importance for the United Church
members. Another distinction is the role of women have in the church. No gender
distinction is made-women have equal say in the governing of their local
churches. The Bountiful Community Church is a vital and visible service
organization in Davis County with active boy and girl scouting programs as well
as various support groups. A food bank is located at the church facilities.
Bountiful Community Church, United Church of Christ has been involved with
Friendship Manor since its beginning. Over the years, our members have served on
the Board of Trustees (in alphabetical order):

Holladay United Church of Christ
Established 1952
The United Church of Christ is one of the Protestant churches in the United
States and has 1.7 million members within their 6,400 congregations in the
United States. It is widely regarded as a liberal and progressive denomination
deeply rooted in Biblical theology.
The Holladay United Church of Christ is the result of 45 years of a resolute
congregation’s energies and faith.
Early in 1952, a census was conducted to determine of the residents in the
Holladay area felt the need for a broad-minded, Protestant community church. The
response was positive. People came on a regular basis for Sunday worship
gathering in the basement of the Silver’s Department store.
By August 1952, this small congregation purchased and remodeled an adobe house
on 4800 South and Wander Lane. Thus, a visual Holladay Community Church was
realized. The Reverend S. Macon Cowles, Jr. was the pastor. On November 1, 1953,
charter members were received. Soon, construction for a chapel began with
ground-breaking ceremony on March 13, 1955. The congregation thrived. Community
services are realized through many programs including one of the first crisis
centers. Distribution of surplus food to the needy and elderly.
